Our sister hotel, Fairmont Singapore proudly presents “I Paint my Singapore,” an exhibition showcasing a monumental work by Singaporean artist Yip Yew Chong at our sister hotel, Fairmont Singapore! Completed in early 2023, this ambitious 60-meter acrylic painting offers a captivating glimpse into Yip’s impressions of Singapore during the 1970s and 80s.

Unveiling Singapore’s transformation across 60 meters! This ambitious acrylic painting by Yip Yew Chong, showcased at our sister hotel Fairmont Singapore, is a captivating journey through time. Composed of 27 intricate scenes spread across individual panels (2.2 meters long by 1.1 meters high), the artwork offers a panoramic view of Singapore’s rapid evolution from a traditional “kampong” city (villages) to a modern metropolis. Familiar landmarks like Collyer Quay, Raffles Place with its bustling Change Alley, the Singapore River teeming with bumboats, and the sea-facing Padang surrounded by iconic civic buildings – all come alive, depicting the very neighbourhood where Fairmont Singapore proudly stands.

This ambitious artwork by Yip Yew Chong unfolds like a captivating storybook. It all began in August 2021 with a vibrant night scene of Kreta Ayer, the very place where his childhood memories reside – his family lived on the second floor of a shophouse depicted in the painting. Over 18 months, scene by scene, Yip meticulously brought Singapore’s transformation to life. The final piece, completed in January 2023, depicts Kreta Ayer bathed in daylight. These contrasting scenes, seamlessly joined together, showcase the city’s evolution across time.

Prepare to be immersed in this monumental piece, titled “I Paint my Singapore.” Spanning 60 meters, the artwork will be displayed in a semi-circular arrangement at a dedicated exhibition on Level 4 of the Raffles City Convention Centre. This is the first time the complete work will be unveiled to the public.

“While this exhibition features a single artwork,” Yip Yew Chong reflects, “it’s the one piece I hope all of Singapore will come and see. It represents my most significant creation, a heartfelt tribute to the city I love.”

William J. Haandrikman, Managing Director at Fairmont Singapore and Swissôtel The Stamford, added, “It’s indeed an honour to showcase such a significant Singaporean masterpiece at Raffles City Convention Centre, whose location within the Civic District has been an integral evolution of Singapore’s history. We look forward to welcoming visitors to take in this impressive work of art. Fairmont Singapore is committed to fostering connections with our vibrant local culture and heritage, ensuring that our guests leave with unforgettable memories of Singapore.”

The exhibition is open to the public free of charge from November 30th, 2023 to January 1st, 2024, daily from 10 am to 8 pm. Accor Live Limitless (ALL) members can enjoy an exclusive one-hour private tour led by Yip Yew Chong himself! These tours run from Thursdays to Sundays at 5 pm but require advanced reservations.
